版画に於ける「伝統＋サムシング・ニュー」とは何でしょうか？
一時は、木版＋シルクスクリーンや、石版（リトグラフ）＋シルクスクリーン、木版で写真の網点を拡大表現される方等が何人かいらっしゃいました。
当時は「あっ」と目を引いたものでした。シルクスクリーンで有名な「アンディ・ウォーホル」の最初に観た作品は確か「キャンベル・スープ缶」でした。他にエルビス・プレスリーやマリリン・モンローの写真を加工したもの等有りました。
これ等の作品は、純粋美術では有りませんから、評論家達の説明書きを読まなければ理解できません。つまり、綺麗な物を描くのでは無く、自分が生きて来た、生活体験して来たことを「主」として、それに対して理由付けをして行くやり方です。これを「コンセプト・アート」と呼びます。
コンセプト・アート自体は二十世紀始めに出現しています。それは、良いのですが、アンディと同じ事を日本人が、中国人がやってここまで有名になったかどうか？ これはもの凄く疑問です。
「良いものは良い。人種は関係ない」と果たして言い切れるでしょうか？ 我々日本人は、欧米人と比べて多少なりの「ハンディ」が有るような気がします。版画の伝統は、何も日本の浮世絵に拘る必要は無いと思いますが、海外で日本人が版画をやっていると聞くと、必ず「浮世絵ですか？」と聞かれるのも確かなことでしょう。
西洋には、銅版画や木口木版、リトグラフ、アメリカにはシルクスクリーン等が有りますが、日本人が銅版画、シルクスクリーン等をメインに仕事をしても良いと思います。
しかし、それはやはり作品＋サムシング・ニューが問題なのです。何も新しい技法だけでは有りません。新しい考え方でも、新しい気持ちでも良いのです。そして、絵を見た人の視線を、ほんの十数秒間だけ「貴方の絵」に留めることが出来れば良いのです。大抵の場合、お客の視線はたった二・三秒で他に移ってしまいますから。
